TikTok Trend Mocking Murdered Texas Teen Sparks Outrage

A disturbing TikTok trend has ignited widespread condemnation after users began posting videos that appear to mock the killing of Texas teenager Austin Metcalf, transforming a family's tragedy into viral content.

The videos feature individuals dancing to a rap song titled "Austin Bop," with some users appearing to act out stabbing motions while others hold knives as they mimic the fatal attack. Additional clips circulating on the platform include jokes and memes targeting Metcalf and his family.

The trend centers on the 2025 killing of the 17-year-old, who was fatally stabbed during an altercation at a high school track meet. Karmelo Anthony was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison after a jury rejected his claim of self-defense.

The song featured in the videos includes lyrics referencing the stabbing and Metcalf's death. Another track circulating online reportedly takes aim at Austin's twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, who was with him in the aftermath of the attack.

The videos have drawn widespread condemnation across social media platforms, with numerous users characterizing the trend as cruel and accusing content creators of exploiting a family's grief for viral entertainment. The backlash highlights ongoing concerns about the boundaries of acceptable content on social media and the ease with which tragic real-world events can be transformed into insensitive online trends.

The incident underscores the challenges facing social media platforms in moderating content that, while not explicitly violating community guidelines, crosses ethical boundaries by mocking victims of violence and their families. As of Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the videos continue to circulate despite the public outcry.
