Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, that he is halting all remaining executions in the state for the rest of the year, following a botched attempt to execute Christa Pike. The governor also confirmed that he has directed a comprehensive, independent review to determine the cause of the failure, according to AP News.

In a statement, Lee emphasized the gravity of the state's responsibility: "Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the state’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective."

The execution attempt, which took place earlier, involved two failed injections. Witnesses reported that Pike was left snoring loudly and had not lost consciousness, with her heart still beating. An ambulance subsequently transported her from the prison. Her current condition has not been disclosed.

The legal proceedings leading up to the attempt were complex. A federal appeals court had issued a stay of execution, but the Supreme Court later lifted that stay, permitting the sentence to proceed.

Pike was convicted for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, who was 19 years old at the time. Pike was 18 years old when the crime occurred.

The governor's decision to pause executions and order a third-party review underscores the serious concerns raised by the failed procedure. The halt will remain in effect while the review is conducted, though no timeline has been provided.
