A harrowing rescue operation unfolded in San Francisco on Wednesday morning after a man became trapped inside a garbage truck while searching through a dumpster.

According to firefighters, the incident occurred in the early morning hours of September 2, 2026, when the individual was rummaging through a dumpster. A Recology garbage truck arrived at the location to collect the container's contents, unaware that someone was inside.

The truck's automated lifting mechanism hoisted the dumpster and emptied both the refuse and the man into the vehicle's collection compartment. The situation became critical when bystanders heard screams for help emanating from inside the truck and alerted the driver.

KTUV FOX 2 reported that over two dozen firefighters responded to the emergency. The rescue crew faced the challenging task of removing trash from the truck to reach the man, who had become buried underneath the debris. The extraction operation required two hours to complete.

The incident became more serious when it was revealed that the truck driver had activated the vehicle's compactor once before becoming aware that someone was trapped inside. The extent of any injuries the man may have sustained from the compactor remains unclear.

Fire department officials indicated they plan to interview the rescued individual to determine the circumstances that led him to be inside the dumpster at the time of collection.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with dumpster diving and the importance of situational awareness for both waste collection workers and members of the public. Recology has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident or any potential changes to safety protocols.
