Actor Sam Neill has announced he is cancer-free following his participation in an Australian clinical trial, marking a significant milestone in his five-year battle with stage 3 blood cancer. The 78-year-old Jurassic Park star shared the news during an interview with Australia's 7News on Sunday, April 26, revealing that recent scans show no cancer in his body.
"I've been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business, but it was keeping me alive," Neill explained to the news outlet. The actor's journey took a critical turn when his chemotherapy treatment ceased to be effective, prompting his enrollment in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced treatment that genetically modifies blood cells to combat cancer.
Neill first disclosed his cancer diagnosis publicly in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, where he detailed his experience undergoing chemotherapy. The New Zealand-born actor was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in early 2023, after experiencing swollen glands while promoting the 2022 film Jurassic World Dominion.
The situation became dire when traditional treatment options failed. "I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn't ideal, obviously," Neill stated. The clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy proved to be a turning point in his treatment. "I've just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that's an extraordinary thing," the Peaky Blinders alum declared.
Neill is now leveraging his experience to advocate for broader access to CAR-T cell therapy for blood cancer patients throughout Australia. His public support for the treatment underscores the potential impact of clinical trials and innovative therapies in cancer care, particularly for patients who have exhausted conventional treatment options.
In a March 2023 interview with the Guardian, Neill reflected on the emotional toll of his diagnosis and treatment. "I can't pretend that the last year hasn't had its dark moments," he acknowledged. "But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive."
During his treatment, Neill channeled his energy into writing his memoir as a coping mechanism. "I found myself with nothing to do," he explained to the Guardian. "And I'm used to working. I love working. I love going to work. I love being with people every day and enjoying human company and friendship and all these things. And suddenly I was deprived of that."
The writing process became therapeutic for the actor. "I never had any intention to write a book," Neill continued. "But as I went on and kept writing, I realised it was actually sort of giving me a reason to live and I would go to bed thinking, 'I'll write about that tomorrow … that will entertain me.' And so it was a lifesaver really, because I couldn't have gone through that with nothing to do, you know."
With his health restored, Neill is now looking forward to returning to his career. "It's time I did another movie," he told 7News, signaling his readiness to resume acting after his prolonged health battle. His recovery represents not only a personal victory but also highlights the promise of emerging cancer treatments for patients facing similar diagnoses.
