Jake Whisenant, a climber who achieved international recognition for setting the speed record on Yosemite's El Capitan, has died at age 30, according to the Tulare County Sheriff's Office Coroner.
The California Post reported that Whisenant passed away on August 3, 2026. Authorities have not released information regarding the circumstances of his death.
Bailee Moore, who identified herself as a longtime friend of Whisenant, posted a tribute on social media acknowledging his passing. Moore indicated that those close to Whisenant find comfort in knowing he was engaged in his passion at the time of his death.
Whisenant gained prominence in the climbing community in 2024 when he and fellow climber Brant Hysell completed the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan in just under 3 hours, shattering the previous speed record for that ascent. The achievement demonstrated exceptional skill and endurance on one of the world's most challenging rock faces.
In another remarkable accomplishment, Whisenant and climber Noah Fox reportedly ascended The Nose, a prominent rock formation in Yosemite, twice in a single day.
