IRS Says Aaron Carter's Estate Owes $461K in Back Taxes

The estate of the late pop singer Aaron Carter is facing a substantial federal tax claim, according to documents filed by the Internal Revenue Service and obtained by TMZ.com. The IRS asserts that it is owed $461,253.54 in taxes, interest, and penalties, and has filed the paperwork with the court in an effort to collect.

The filings identify several unpaid tax balances spanning multiple years: 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. The oldest balance is comparatively minor at $326.60, but the amounts escalate significantly over time. For 2021 alone, the combined balance, interest, and penalties total $172,538.70, according to the documents reported by TMZ.com.

The tax claim arrives against the backdrop of a prolonged dispute over Carter's financial affairs. Carter died in November 2022, and his estate has been the subject of contention ever since. Earlier this year, his mother, Jane Schneck, fought to keep the estate operating, but a judge ultimately ruled it insolvent and closed it. All non-cash assets were awarded to his ex, Melanie Martin.

Schneck had raised concerns about the handling of the estate, arguing that the trustee in charge had undervalued the worth of Carter's royalties. She also alleged that Martin had made "illegal withdrawals" from Carter's accounts amounting to $24,530, as reported by TMZ.com.

Given that the estate has already been closed as insolvent, it remains unclear how the IRS expects the tax bill to be satisfied. TMZ.com reported that it reached out to Carter's estate for further information.

The case highlights the complex financial legacy left behind by the singer, whose estate continues to generate legal and fiscal complications years after his death. For local readers following the administration of celebrity estates, the filing underscores how unresolved tax obligations can persist even after an estate is formally closed.
