Halsey Unleashes Scathing Attack on Music Critic

A long-simmering dispute between Grammy-nominated singer Halsey and prominent YouTube music critic Anthony Fantano erupted into public view on Sunday, June 21, 2026, as the pop star unleashed a series of blistering social media posts defending her 2024 album against his scathing review.

The confrontation began when social media users resurfaced discussions about Halsey's album "The Great Impersonator" and Fantano's negative assessment of the work. Without warning, Halsey directly engaged the critic, quote-tweeting Fantano with a pointed declaration that she was "certain my least memorable song will be remembered more fondly and for more time than anything you ever do with your life will be," according to TMZ.com.

The exchange quickly intensified as Halsey accused Fantano of being more "whiny" and "edgy" than she ever was on the album. The singer then invoked her serious health struggles, noting that she had the excuse of undergoing chemotherapy treatment for blood cancer, with which she was diagnosed in 2022. This reference appeared to directly counter Fantano's characterization in his 2024 review, where he described Halsey as having the worst case of main character syndrome he had ever heard on a pop record.

Fantano attempted to defuse the situation by responding that he was flattered to be on Halsey's radar, calling her a "queen." The gesture failed to mollify the artist, who escalated her criticism by labeling him a "raised-by-4chan edgelord bully."

After discussing her health challenges further, Halsey concluded her social media barrage with a terse farewell: "That's all and good luck to this man!"

Fantano operates the YouTube channel "The Needle Drop" and describes himself as the "internet's busiest music nerd." His influence in music criticism has grown substantially in recent years, though he has faced accusations of bias. The critic recently drew controversy after interviewing singer Olivia Rodrigo, with some online commenters suggesting he demonstrates prejudice toward female artists.

The original source of Halsey's ire was Fantano's brutal assessment of "The Great Impersonator," to which he assigned a rating of "decent 1" out of 10 in his review. Such an extraordinarily low score represents one of the harshest evaluations in Fantano's extensive catalog of music criticism.

The public dispute highlights the ongoing tension between artists and critics in the digital age, where social media platforms enable direct confrontations that would have been impossible in previous eras of music journalism. For Halsey, an artist who created the album while battling a life-threatening illness, Fantano's dismissive review appears to have struck a particularly painful nerve nearly two years after its publication.
