Fleck Smears Player's Blood on Face After Gophers Win

University of Minnesota head football coach P.J. Fleck turned a routine postgame celebration into a viral moment on Saturday, wiping blood from a linebacker's mouth and smearing it across his own face following the Golden Gophers' road win against Washington at Husky Stadium.

The incident occurred as Fleck celebrated the victory, approaching linebacker Maverick Baranowski. The two embraced before Fleck took Baranowski's hand and ran it over the player's bloody mouth, leaving a visible red streak on the coach's cheek and a stain on his shirt.

FOX Sports commentators Jack Kizer and Mark Helfrich reacted with visible shock on the broadcast, noting that Fleck had literally put the blood into the team's "blood, sweat and tears" win.

Baranowski addressed the moment afterward, telling TMZ.com, "I love that guy more than anyone, and it's just such an awesome opportunity to share that moment with him," while describing Fleck as "a crazy man."

Fleck, for his part, referred to Baranowski as his official "blood brother" following the victory, according to TMZ.com.

The gesture quickly spread across social media, where a clip of the exchange circulated widely. The win marked a significant road result for Minnesota against a Pac-12 opponent, though the postgame scene overshadowed much of the on-field discussion.

Fleck, known for his energetic sideline demeanor and motivational slogans, has built a reputation for unconventional leadership tactics during his tenure with the Golden Gophers. Saturday's display added another entry to that list, drawing comparisons to fictional antihero Patrick Bateman from the film "American Psycho" due to the blood-streaked image.

The moment was first reported by TMZ.com on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 9:48 a.m. PDT.
