President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana on Saturday following catastrophic weather events that have killed at least five people and displaced hundreds of residents across the state.

The federal authorization enables assistance for Indiana's emergency response to destructive weather conditions that commenced on August 11, bringing tornadoes, damaging winds, severe storms, and major flooding to communities statewide. Federal aid will support critical operations including rescue missions, evacuations, and distribution of essential supplies.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun had previously declared a statewide emergency as the scope of destruction became apparent. The northwestern portion of the state experienced destructive wind events, while central Indiana communities confronted torrential downpours that produced catastrophic flooding conditions.

According to Governor Braun, rainfall totals reached 10 inches in certain locations. The city of Gary recorded wind speeds of at least 95 MPH during the storm system. Damage from straight-line winds affected nearly one-third of the state's counties, the governor reported.

Marion County remains particularly hard-hit, with hundreds of residents still displaced from their homes. Record water levels have prompted emergency declarations across multiple Indiana communities as officials coordinate ongoing rescue and evacuation operations. Emergency personnel continue working to access residents in affected zones.

The disaster has left neighborhoods submerged, buildings compromised, trees toppled, and thousands without electrical service. Utility crews have been working continuously to restore power throughout impacted regions.

In Gary, restoration efforts by Northern Indiana Public Service Company crews continued through Saturday. However, work was temporarily suspended after gunfire reportedly hit a vehicle belonging to a utility worker. No injuries were reported in the incident, and officials coordinated enhanced safety protocols with law enforcement before crews resumed their restoration activities.

State and local authorities are prioritizing rescue operations, restoration of critical infrastructure, and assistance for affected residents as recovery efforts continue across Indiana.
