Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner has provided additional details surrounding the death of actor Nicholas Brendon, who passed away at his residence in west-central Putnam County on Monday, March 20.
In a statement released Wednesday, March 25, Zeiner described his arrival at the scene and the circumstances of the discovery. The coroner observed an adult male positioned as if asleep, who had already been pronounced deceased by medical personnel prior to his arrival at the residence.
According to the coroner's report, there were no signs of foul play present at the scene. All evidence indicated the death was natural in nature. Brendon resided alone at the property and was discovered by a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care for the actor.
Zeiner noted that evidence at the scene indicated the time of death was very recent when the body was discovered. Following the discovery, Brendon's body was transported for autopsy, where family members visually identified the deceased. The actor was 54 years old at the time of his death.
Family members reported to authorities that Brendon had a history of cardiac issues. Investigators are currently reviewing videos posted online recently as potential evidence of prior illness. The actor had publicly disclosed that he suffered a heart attack in 2023 and was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital heart defect in addition to cauda equina syndrome, a serious spinal condition.
Cauda equina syndrome occurs when nerve roots in the lumbar spine become compressed, cutting off sensation and movement. Brendon had undergone several spinal surgeries prior to his death as part of his treatment for the condition.
At this time, toxicology results and final autopsy findings remain pending. The official cause of death will be released at a later date once all laboratory work and medical examinations have been completed.
Brendon's family released a statement on March 20 confirming his passing, stating that he died in his sleep of natural causes. The family acknowledged that while the actor had faced struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnoses and remained optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.
The actor gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Xander Harris on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In recent years, family members noted, Brendon had discovered a passion for painting and art, which he enthusiastically shared with family, friends, and fans. His loved ones described him as passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create, noting that his art represented one of the purest reflections of his character.
The investigation into Brendon's death continues as authorities await final laboratory results and medical examinations. The Putnam County Coroner's Office will release additional information once all findings have been completed and reviewed.
