Chris Brown Avoids Jail in London Bottle Attack

Chris Brown walked out of Southwark Crown Court on Monday without a prison term, receiving an eight-month suspended sentence after admitting to an attack on a former associate at a London nightclub more than three years ago.

The R&B singer pleaded guilty to affray — a charge covering unlawful fighting or threatening behavior by two or more individuals that disrupts public order — for the February 2023 incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London. The victim was Abraham 'Abe' Diaw, identified in court reporting as Brown's former friend.

Judge Tony Baumgartner, in remarks reported by TMZ.com, described the assault in detail: "tequila bottle in your right hand, when you reached Diaw you struck him to the left side of his head whilst holding his hood." The judge further stated, according to TMZ.com, "The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous; it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained."

Court testimony indicated that Brown played a leading role in the assault, which lasted roughly 20 seconds and was recorded by closed-circuit television cameras. The judge's decision to suspend the sentence means Brown will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense during the suspension period.

Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who faced the same affray charge as a co-defendant, likewise entered a guilty plea and was spared incarceration, receiving a suspended sentence of his own.

Brown's legal troubles connected to the case date to 2025, when he was taken into custody at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, England. At the time, he had arrived in the city by private jet to perform at a concert.

The sentencing brings a resolution to a case that has drawn attention on both sides of the Atlantic, though the suspended term means Brown avoids immediate custody. The judge's comments underscore the seriousness with which the court viewed the use of a glass bottle as a weapon, even though the injuries inflicted were less severe than they could have been.
