Katherine Schwarzenegger, the 36-year-old author and daughter of former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, found herself at the center of an unexpected social media controversy following comments she made about her husband, actor Chris Pratt.

On Tuesday, March 31, Schwarzenegger posted to Instagram thanking her husband for constructing a dollhouse by hand for their daughters. In the post, she referred to Pratt, 46, as her "golden retriever husband" and wrote a statement that would spark debate among her followers.

"I'll never understand when women say, 'I don't need my husband,' when I very much in fact do need my husband because who else would build our daughters a doll house," Schwarzenegger wrote in the post.

The comment section quickly filled with responses from followers who viewed the statement as inadvertently reinforcing gender stereotypes. Critics argued that the suggestion that a man was necessary to build a dollhouse perpetuated outdated notions about domestic capabilities divided along gender lines.

"Wives and women can build doll houses, too," one commenter noted. Another follower added perspective from personal experience: "My 70 year old mother builds things for grandkids. This is not specific to men."

One particularly pointed response characterized the post as having "Handmaid's Tale vibes," referencing the dystopian novel depicting a patriarchal society. Another user offered a different interpretation, writing, "Unfortunately, we [women] say that [we don't need husbands] because we get tired of waiting for them to do the project. Which then forces us to just do it."

However, Schwarzenegger also received support from followers who defended her intentions. Several commenters praised Pratt for taking the time to build the dollhouse himself rather than purchasing one or hiring someone to construct it. "Let's be honest, he could easily afford someone to do it for him," one supporter wrote, emphasizing the personal touch of the handmade gift.

The couple, who married in 2019, share three children: daughters Lyla Maria, 5, and Eloise Christina, 3, and son Ford Fitzgerald, 16 months. Schwarzenegger also serves as stepmother to Jack, Pratt's son from his previous marriage to actress Anna Faris.

Schwarzenegger has been vocal about her parenting philosophy in recent interviews. In September 2025, she discussed the couple's approach to limiting electronic devices in their household, stating they prefer to have their children spend time outdoors and engage in creative activities reminiscent of their own 1990s childhoods.

"Storytime and book reading is such a big part of our daily routine every single day," Schwarzenegger said at the time. "Our kids want to read books morning, noon and night."

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Schwarzenegger is one of five children of Arnold Schwarzenegger and journalist Maria Shriver. Despite her Hollywood roots, she has indicated openness to relocating her family, though she emphasized in November 2025 that proximity to her parents and siblings remains her highest priority.

"There's nothing that is more important to me than being able to be in close proximity to my parents and to my siblings," she stated. "And to be able to have that for our children is such a huge blessing and a gift."

Representatives for Schwarzenegger have been contacted for comment regarding the social media response to her recent post.
