Emmy-winning actress Kristen Johnston has issued a public call for celebrity blogger Perez Hilton to apologize for past behavior, following news of his recent hospitalization for a life-threatening infection. The confrontation has reignited discussions about accountability and the lasting impact of online cruelty.

Johnston, 58, known for her roles in Sex and the City and Third Rock from the Sun, shared her perspective via social media posts on Wednesday, March 25. She recounted a painful period in her life when she struggled with the physical aftermath of long-term opiate abuse, a journey she documented in her book GUTS.

According to Johnston, her recovery left her severely underweight and struggling to eat for approximately one year. During this vulnerable time, Hilton published content mocking her appearance and weight, which the actress said triggered harassment from his followers.

The actress explained that she was prompted to speak out after learning that Hilton, 48, had been hospitalized and had experienced a religious awakening. While expressing hope for his recovery, Johnston made clear that genuine change requires more than words.

"I will never forget how casually and relentlessly he would attack women and young girls in the 2000s and how terrible it felt to be made fun of by him while I struggled through the darkest time of my life," Johnston wrote. "If he is truly changed, I hope it goes beyond words and he tries to make amends for his cruelty. I know he hurt a lot of people."

Several entertainment industry figures publicly supported Johnston's statement. Comedian Elayne Boosler and DJ Samantha Ronson, whose past relationship with Lindsay Lohan was frequently covered by Hilton's website, both responded critically. Actress Lauren Holly expressed sympathy for Johnston's experience.

Hilton disclosed on Monday, March 23, that he had spent 21 days hospitalized after developing an ulcer, perforation, and sepsis. He attributed the medical emergency to repeatedly taking medication for a stomach ailment without eating. The blogger underwent laparoscopic surgery and required multiple medical interventions during his stay.

In discussing his hospitalization, Hilton described experiencing what he characterized as a spiritual revelation. Raised Catholic and educated at Jesuit schools for seven years, he stated that he had never previously considered himself a believer but now feels transformed by the experience.

This is not the first time Hilton has addressed his controversial past. In 2021, he told Sky News that he carries "deep shame and regret" over his treatment of celebrities including Britney Spears during the height of his blogging career in the 2000s. He acknowledged that his behavior could not be excused by youth alone.

The situation highlights ongoing conversations about accountability in the digital age, particularly regarding the long-term effects of public mockery and online harassment. Johnston's call for direct amends rather than general statements of regret represents a demand for concrete action from those who wielded influence to harm others.

Representatives for Hilton had not responded to requests for comment as of publication. Johnston's social media posts were subsequently deleted, though screenshots and responses from other public figures remain visible online.
