The family of actor Samuel Monroe Jr. faces an excruciating choice as his medical condition continues to deteriorate following a four-month hospitalization that began with a severe meningitis infection.

Monroe, recognized for his performance in the 1993 film "Menace II Society," has remained on life support in a medically induced coma at a Los Angeles hospital since April. What started as a case of severe meningitis evolved into MRSA pneumonia, triggering a cascade of life-threatening complications that have left medical professionals with diminishing hope for recovery.

His wife, Shawna Stewart, provided an update on the actor's deteriorating neurological condition. Monroe's brain continues to experience dangerous swelling as enlarged ventricles fail to properly contain cerebral fluid, resulting in seizures. The actor has undergone three brain surgeries in an attempt to address these issues, Stewart told TMZ.

Compounding the neurological crisis, Monroe's left lung has partially collapsed, adding respiratory failure to the list of critical conditions requiring intensive medical intervention.

Medical staff continue conducting CT scans to assess brain activity, but physicians have warned the family that Monroe may ultimately enter a vegetative state. This grim prognosis has placed his loved ones in the position of contemplating end-of-life decisions.

The actor's battle has required multiple blood transfusions within days of each other as MRSA pneumonia and meningitis ravaged his system. He has also been placed on dialysis as his organs struggle to function.

Stewart indicated the family has reached a consensus on their approach moving forward. Monroe will undergo three to four additional CT scans, and the results of those tests will determine whether the family proceeds with a heartbreaking final decision. The family launched a GoFundMe campaign in April to help cover mounting medical expenses.

The prolonged medical crisis represents a devastating turn for the actor, whose career included his memorable work in the acclaimed crime drama that explored life in South Central Los Angeles during the early 1990s.
