Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for portraying Xander Harris throughout seven seasons of the supernatural drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at age 54, his family announced Friday.

The family released a statement confirming that Brendon died in his sleep from natural causes on March 20. The announcement emphasized both his professional achievements and his personal artistic pursuits in recent years.

"We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon," the family stated. "Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art."

The statement highlighted Brendon's dedication to artistic expression beyond his acting career. "Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was," the family noted.

Brendon portrayed Xander Harris, a central character in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer ensemble, appearing alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, and Anthony Head throughout the series' complete run. His character served as one of the core members of the group fighting supernatural threats. Beyond this signature role, Brendon appeared in various television and film projects through 2021.

The family acknowledged that Brendon had faced personal challenges, stating it was "no secret" he "had struggles in the past." However, they emphasized that at the time of his death, "he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future."

In 2023, Brendon publicly disclosed significant health challenges, revealing he had suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also disclosed a diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome, a serious neurological condition. He had undergone multiple spinal surgeries prior to his death.

"Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart," the statement concluded. "Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support."

Brendon's death adds to the list of entertainment industry figures who have passed away in 2026. His contributions to television, particularly through his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, left a lasting impact on fans of the genre and the series' devoted following.
