A UFC welterweight has disclosed startling details about his recent incarceration in Mexico, where he claims cartel members provided protection during an eight-month detention in Tijuana. Daniel Rodriguez, known in mixed martial arts circles as D-Rod, shared his experience in a candid interview published Sunday, describing a harrowing period that has now concluded with his return to professional competition.

The 39-year-old fighter, who holds a 20-5 professional record, characterized the experience as unlike any previous incarceration he had faced. Rodriguez told Babcock that the Mexican detention facility presented challenges far beyond typical correctional environments.

"I've been in jail before. It's not my first rodeo, but this was a whole different monster," Rodriguez stated. "Surrounded by the lowest of the low. You can imagine jail, then you can imagine jail in Mexico."

According to Rodriguez, his identity as a professional fighter became known within the facility, leading to intervention from what he described as individuals in positions of authority. The fighter indicated these protectors were cartel members who ensured he received preferential treatment and remained safe from potential violence.

"Fortunately for me, word kind of got around who I was and I had people in high places take care of me and stuff," Rodriguez explained. "I guess you can say for the most part I was put in probably the best living situation."

The fighter emphasized that the protection proved effective throughout his detention. "I did get a lot of love in there, but it is jail, and it is Mexico. It was a crazy experience," he said. "Luckily, nothing happened. I was in the right crowd of people where nobody f***ed with me, nobody messed with me and I didn't have to beat anybody's ass or nothing like that."

Rodriguez has wasted no time returning to his athletic career following his release from the Tijuana facility. The welterweight announced he has accepted a significant matchup against Leon Edwards, scheduled for International Fight Week in July. The announcement came shortly after receiving the offer from UFC officials.

"I got an amazing offer. You guys will probably be seeing me in there with Leon Edwards, International Fight Week, sometime around July," Rodriguez revealed. He confirmed making his decision public immediately after deliberating on the opportunity.

"I've been thinking about it. Made the decision right now. I'm accepting the offer for Leon Edwards, International Fight Week. Let's go!" the fighter declared.

The bout represents a major opportunity for Rodriguez as he resumes competition following the extended absence. International Fight Week typically serves as one of the UFC's premier annual events, drawing significant attention from mixed martial arts fans worldwide. The matchup against Edwards positions Rodriguez for substantial visibility as he attempts to rebuild momentum in the welterweight division.

Rodriguez did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances that led to his detention in Tijuana or the charges he faced during the eight-month period. The fighter's focus has shifted entirely to preparation for the upcoming contest, marking a definitive return to the sport following an unconventional and dangerous interruption to his career.
