Trump Responds to Prince Harry's Ukraine Remarks

President Donald Trump issued a sarcastic response to Prince Harry on Thursday, April 23, following the Duke of Sussex's surprise appearance at the Kyiv Security Forum in Ukraine, where he urged the United States to take more direct action in ending the ongoing war with Russia.

During an Oval Office press conference, Trump, 79, deflected questions about Prince Harry's remarks with a pointed query about the royal's personal life. "Prince Harry? How's he doing? How's his wife?" the president asked, referring to Meghan Markle. "Please give her my regards."

The exchange came hours after Harry, 41, addressed the security forum in Kyiv, where he emphasized America's unique responsibility in the conflict. "The United States has a singular role in this story," Harry stated. "Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine's sovereignty and borders would be respected."

The Duke of Sussex continued his appeal for American leadership without directly naming Trump. "This is a moment for American leadership. A moment for America to show that it can honor its international treaty obligations, not out of charity, but out of its own enduring role in global security and strategic stability," he said.

When pressed by reporters about Prince Harry's call for more direct United States involvement in the Russia-Ukraine peace process, Trump dismissed the royal's authority to speak on the matter. "I know one thing: Prince Harry is not speaking for the U.K. That's for sure," Trump declared. "I think I'm speaking for the U.K. more than Prince Harry. But I appreciate his advice."

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has persisted since 2014, with hostilities intensifying dramatically in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Trump campaigned in 2024 on a promise to end the war on the first day of his second administration, yet the conflict continues unabated.

The latest exchange represents another chapter in the reported tensions between Trump and the Sussexes. During a state visit to the United Kingdom in September 2025, Trump notably omitted any mention of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during a state banquet speech at Windsor Castle, instead praising King Charles and Prince William.

At that event, Trump stated, "I just want to say that His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son in His Royal Highness, Prince of Wales. Really amazing. We've gotten to know you and I think you're going to have unbelievable success in future." He added praise for Prince William's wife, saying, "Melania and I are delighted to visit again with Prince William and to see Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine, so radiant and so healthy, so beautiful."

Prince Harry has not remained silent in this ongoing dynamic. During a December 2025 appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Duke made his own veiled reference to the president. When discussing American fascination with royalty-themed Christmas movies, host Stephen Colbert, 61, protested that Americans are not obsessed with royalty. Harry responded with a pointed joke: "Really? I heard you elected a king."

The timing of Thursday's exchange is particularly notable as King Charles is scheduled to visit the United States next week, adding another layer of diplomatic complexity to the already strained relationship between the Trump administration and certain members of the British royal family.
