A security incident disrupted the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington D.C. when gunshots rang out, prompting the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt from the event.

According to CNN, all three individuals were confirmed safe following the incident. A Secret Service spokesperson stated that a suspect is now in custody, though details about the shooter's identity and motive have not been released.

The 79-year-old president and the 56-year-old first lady were quickly escorted from the stage as security protocols were activated. The swift response by Secret Service agents and law enforcement prevented what could have been a catastrophic situation at one of Washington's most high-profile annual gatherings.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was present at the event, provided a firsthand account of the terrifying moments. Speaking on air via phone, the 78-year-old journalist described hearing gunshots that were "very loud, very scary" coming from outside the main ballroom where the annual dinner was taking place.

"Apparently they got the gunman … It was very, very scary," Blitzer shared during his live report. "It was just a terrible, scary, frightening moment for me. … The incident looks like it's over."

Blitzer reported witnessing the shooter "on the ground" after being tackled by police, though he expressed uncertainty about whether the suspect had been shot during the apprehension. "I could be wrong," he noted. "There's a lot of law enforcement here dealing with this."

The White House Correspondents' Dinner, an annual tradition that brings together journalists, politicians, and celebrities, has historically been a platform for political satire and press freedom advocacy. The security breach raises serious questions about protective measures at high-profile Washington events, particularly those attended by the president and other senior government officials.

In a remarkable decision, organizers chose to continue the event after the security situation was resolved. Journalist Weijia Jiang returned to the podium to address attendees, stating, "The program is going to resume shortly. We will have more details to share momentarily, but for now, please be patient."

The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the Secret Service in protecting the president and other high-ranking officials at public events. While the quick response prevented injuries, the breach will likely prompt a comprehensive review of security protocols for future gatherings of this magnitude.

This remains a developing story as authorities continue their investigation into the incident and the suspect's background. Further details are expected to emerge as law enforcement completes its preliminary assessment of the security breach.
