Swift and Braun Nearly Meet at NBA Finals

An awkward near-encounter unfolded at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, June 10, as Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun attended the same NBA Finals game, separated by only a few rows and a barricade.

The 36-year-old singer sat courtside with close friends Alana and Este Haim, all wearing custom Knicks gear as the New York team faced the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4. Meanwhile, Braun, 44, and his girlfriend Sydney Sweeney, 28, occupied seats only rows behind Swift's group, according to footage shared by Entertainment Tonight.

The ABC broadcast showed Swift and her companions cheering enthusiastically throughout the game, though it remains unclear whether they were aware of Braun's proximity. The physical barrier between the sections may have prevented any direct interaction between the former business associates.

This appearance represents the closest Swift and Braun have been to one another since their highly publicized dispute erupted in 2019. That year, Braun acquired Swift's master recordings from her former record label, Big Machine, for a reported $330 million. Swift publicly opposed the sale and subsequently began re-recording her classic albums to regain creative control over her music catalog.

The contentious relationship between the two music industry figures took another turn when Braun sold the rights to Swift's masters to Shamrock Capital for $300 million in November 2020. Nearly five years later, in May 2025, Swift announced she had successfully regained the rights to her original recordings.

In a statement posted on her website at the time, Swift expressed her overwhelming emotion about the achievement. She described her mind as "just a slideshow" and reflected on the years of uncertainty, writing that she had "almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away."

Swift later revealed on her fiancé Travis Kelce's podcast in August 2025 the profound impact of securing her music rights. She recounted interrupting Kelce during a video game session to share the news, describing how she "absolutely started heaving crying" and lost the power in her legs. The moment represented a significant personal and professional victory after years of legal and business maneuvering.

Braun has maintained a relatively measured public stance regarding the dispute. When asked about Swift regaining control of her catalog, he told TMZ that he simply wished everybody the best. However, in a May interview on Suzy Weiss' "Second Thought" podcast, Braun expressed frustration with his portrayal in the controversy.

"[I] went from being like, loved and appreciated for over a decade to literally a villain the next night," Braun said, speaking to the podcast. "I don't know Taylor Swift. I think I've met her in my life three times." He emphasized that he had never had a substantial conversation with Swift and noted that one would not spend $300 million acquiring a label unless excited about the opportunity to work with the artist.

Swift's attendance at Wednesday's game carried additional significance beyond the Braun proximity. The singer has been rumored to be planning her wedding to Kelce, 36, at Madison Square Garden later this year, making her courtside appearance at the venue particularly noteworthy for fans and observers.

The near-encounter at the NBA Finals serves as a reminder of one of the music industry's most contentious disputes in recent years, even as both parties have moved forward with their respective careers and personal lives. Whether the two acknowledged each other's presence at the game remains unknown, but the seating arrangement ensured that any potential interaction would have been difficult at best.
