Support Dog Wakes Deaf Owner, Saves Husband After Stair Fall

A trained support dog in Staffordshire, England, is being credited with saving a man's life after she woke her deaf owner in the middle of the night to signal that something was seriously wrong. Sandra Donally, 62, was asleep when her dog Storm jumped onto the bed shortly after midnight, refusing to settle until her owner followed her attention toward the landing.

Sandra initially assumed her husband, Gary, had simply gotten up to use the bathroom. The landing light was on, and at that hour the explanation seemed ordinary. Storm's behavior, however, was anything but. The dog sat rigidly at the far end of the bed, staring out toward the landing and ignoring commands to return to sleep.

"She just sat ramrod straight at the other end of the bed, staring out towards the landing," Sandra told Good News Network. "I told her that Gary was in the bathroom and asked her to go back to bed, but she wouldn't move."

When Sandra went to investigate, she discovered Gary at the foot of the staircase, bleeding and unconscious. The couple later determined that he had left the bathroom, missed the handrail, and lost his footing on the stairs.

Paramedics transported Gary to Royal Stoke Hospital, where he stayed for 24 days while undergoing reconstructive surgery on his broken jaw. Sandra said the timing of Storm's alert proved critical. The household typically rises at half past six, meaning Gary could have remained on the floor for roughly six hours before anyone noticed his absence.

"When she wouldn't look at me, I knew something was wrong," Sandra told Good News Network. "We usually get up at half past six, so that's when I would've noticed Gary wasn't in bed—he'd have lain there for six hours, losing blood and with a broken jaw. I'll always be so grateful to her for alerting me."

Sandra's hearing loss came on abruptly in 2017 as the result of a rare disorder. She was matched with Storm, a trained service dog, in 2024. Since then, the partnership has reshaped her daily life, according to Sandra, who described herself as no longer withdrawn.

"I don't feel withdrawn anymore because I have Storm by my side; I'm out and about and it's great," she told Good News Network.

The episode underscores the role that trained assistance dogs can play in households where a resident cannot rely on sound for overnight awareness. In this case, Storm's persistence—remaining fixed at the edge of the bed rather than obeying a command to lie down—provided the warning that Sandra's hearing could not.
