Social Media Personality Explains Courthouse Embrace with Ex's Mother

A social media personality has provided context for an emotional moment captured on video during a high-profile custody hearing at Salt Lake City's Third District Courthouse this week.

Taylor Frankie Paul, 31, addressed footage showing her embracing Cheyenne Cranford Mortensen, the mother of her ex-partner Dakota Mortensen, following a Thursday, April 30 court proceeding. The video, shared by a fan Instagram account, prompted questions from followers about the unexpected display of affection between the two women.

Responding in the comments section, Paul explained the significance of the moment. "That was my goodbye to a family my older kids and I loved deeply❤️‍🩹," she wrote. Paul shares a 2-year-old son named Ever with Dakota Mortensen, and has two children from a previous marriage to Tate Paul: daughter Indy, 8, and son Ocean, 5.

The courthouse appearance marked a pivotal development in the former couple's legal disputes. Utah Commissioner Russell Minas issued mutual protective orders requiring Paul and Mortensen, 33, to maintain a distance of 100 feet from each other for a period of three years.

During the hearing, Commissioner Minas delivered pointed remarks about the nature of the relationship between the two parties. "This has been a very toxic relationship. It's beyond the pale in a lot of ways, the toxicity," Minas stated from the bench. "What I've seen from the evidence even post [the] last hearing, there seems to be a continuing attraction that they have for each other. … You guys have to figure out a lot here. You have to figure out how to function as coparents."

The commissioner characterized the relationship as "dysfunctional" and expressed concern about the ongoing conflict. "I'm hoping that you're not people who just thrive on the drama and the conflict," he added. "You've got to put your child first and shield the child from this conflict. I'm going to leave the current order in place. I need to think a little bit more about this lifting of supervision. I have mixed feelings about it."

The custody arrangement for the couple's young son remained unchanged following Thursday's proceedings. Dakota Mortensen was granted temporary custody of Ever in March amid allegations of domestic violence. Paul currently has supervised visitation rights allowing up to eight hours with the toddler.

The protective orders stem from two police investigations into domestic violence allegations involving both parties. Dakota Mortensen filed for a temporary protective order against Paul in March, while Paul obtained her own temporary protective order against Mortensen in April.

Paul's legal representation characterized the hearing as progress in the contentious case. Attorney Eric M. Swinyard issued a statement following the proceedings, emphasizing the protective measures now in place.

"Today's hearing was a significant step forward as the Court entered protective orders requiring that Taylor's ex-partner stays far away from her," Swinyard stated. "Taylor was incredibly candid with the Court that she is not perfect and owned her faults, which is in direct contrast to how the other party presented their argument, despite evidence and input from law enforcement that showed otherwise."

The attorney added that his client "feels solidarity with the many survivors who have endured similar hardships behind closed doors and shared only part of their stories, and she remains grateful for the outpouring of support she continues to receive. She looks forward to continuing to cooperate with the Court to make progress in the custody case."

The case continues to draw public attention as both parties navigate the complex intersection of custody arrangements, protective orders, and ongoing legal proceedings in Salt Lake City's family court system.
