In an extraordinary display of gratitude and respect, students at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma crowned their principal as Prom King following his heroic intervention during a potentially deadly incident at the school.

Principal Kirk Moore became an unlikely candidate for the ceremonial honor after he disarmed a gunman who entered the school building, sustaining a gunshot wound in the process. The incident, captured on security camera footage, shows the dramatic moments when Moore's quick thinking and decisive action prevented further violence.

According to security footage released by Pauls Valley High School, suspected gunman Victor Hawkins, a former student at the school, entered the building with a handgun and pointed it at several students in the lobby. The footage shows Moore emerging from his office and immediately tackling the armed individual to the ground. Another staff member then assisted in removing the weapon from the scene.

Following the confrontation, Moore was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Medical personnel attended to his gunshot wound, and the principal recovered quickly enough to return to his duties within a short period.

The true measure of Moore's impact on his school community became evident at the prom held later that month. When the principal entered the dancehall, students greeted him with thunderous applause and presented him with the Prom King crown. The gesture represented far more than a traditional high school honor—it served as a powerful statement of appreciation from students whose lives may have been saved by their principal's courage.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Hunter McKee praised the response to the incident, stating, "The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives."

Victor Hawkins currently remains in custody awaiting trial on May 8th, where he will face various firearms and shooting charges. The legal proceedings will determine the consequences for his actions that day at Pauls Valley High School.

The incident highlights the complex and often dangerous situations that school administrators face in their efforts to protect students. Moore's willingness to place himself in harm's way exemplifies the dedication many educators demonstrate toward the safety and well-being of those in their care. His recognition as Prom King serves as a reminder that heroism can emerge in unexpected moments and that communities recognize and honor those who stand up in times of crisis.
