Princess Charlotte celebrated her 11th birthday on Saturday, May 2, with the Prince and Princess of Wales releasing a heartwarming video that showcases the young royal's personality and striking resemblance to her mother, Kate Middleton.
The video, shared via the royal couple's official Instagram account, captures Princess Charlotte spending quality time with her two cocker spaniels, Orla and Otto. The footage also features the birthday girl arranging seashells on a beach to spell out "I ❤️U" and demonstrating impressive athletic ability while pitching a ball overhand with notable speed.
"Thank you for the lovely birthday messages for Princess Charlotte, 11 today," the royal Instagram account wrote alongside the birthday video on Saturday.
In accordance with traditional royal protocol, Prince William and Kate, 44, also released a new official portrait of their daughter to commemorate the milestone. The practice mirrors last year's celebration, when the then-10-year-old appeared beaming in a long-sleeve camouflage jacket in a photograph taken and shared by her mother.
The birthday celebration comes as the young princess continues to mature into her role within the royal family. Royal watcher Sharon Carpenter previously told Us Weekly that Princess Charlotte's parents "have watched Charlotte grow into a smart, confident and funny girl who knows how to hold her own both in the spotlight and outside of it."
Princess Charlotte attends Lambrook School in the Berkshire countryside, where she goes by Charlotte Cambridge. According to royal commentator Amanda Matta, the princess excels academically while pursuing diverse interests outside the classroom. She has developed a passion for baking and participates in multiple sports, including tennis, gymnastics, archery, and other adventurous activities.
"She's the boss of the family," a royal insider revealed to Us Weekly. "Charlotte rules the roost."
The birthday celebration occurs during a challenging period for the royal family, which has faced significant trials including Kate Middleton and King Charles III's cancer battles, ongoing controversies, and family estrangements. Despite these difficulties, sources indicate that William and Kate have maintained a strong partnership.
"William and Kate have been through so much, but they always have each other's backs," a source told Us Weekly. "They are incredibly connected."
Royal historian Marlene Koenig noted that Prince William, 43, has consciously worked to build a different type of marriage than his parents experienced. Princess Diana divorced then-Prince Charles in 1996 after 15 years of marriage. The princess died at age 36 in August 1997 in a car crash in Paris.
"Diana and Charles didn't have the real time to get to know each other," Koenig explained to Us Weekly. "[William] was determined to allow his relationship with Kate to grow. It's a much more modern marriage."
William and Kate married on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. The couple shares three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, now 11, and Prince Louis, 8. The family continues to navigate their public roles while maintaining privacy and normalcy for their children during their formative years.
