Pittsburgh Water Launches Arrearage Forgiveness Program

Pittsburgh Water has rolled out a new program designed to ease the financial burden on residents struggling with overdue water bills. The Arrearage Forgiveness Program, as it is called, offers customers the opportunity to have their pre-September outstanding debt forgiven gradually over a 24-month period.

According to the authority, certain customers were already enrolled in the program as of September. To qualify for the debt relief, participants must simply keep up with their monthly payments going forward. As they do so, the debt they owed before September will be progressively forgiven.

The initiative comes as families across Pittsburgh face rising costs for essential services. By allowing customers to clear old balances through consistent on-time payments rather than lump-sum repayments, the program aims to make water bills more manageable and prevent shutoffs for those who are behind.

Details on eligibility and enrollment were not fully outlined in the initial announcement, but the authority has indicated that the program is already underway. Residents with outstanding water debt are encouraged to contact Pittsburgh Water to see if they qualify.

The Arrearage Forgiveness Program represents a significant step toward addressing utility affordability in the region. As the program progresses, it may serve as a model for other municipalities grappling with similar challenges.
