Pioneering Ospreys Speed Recovery by Nesting Far From Crowds

Ospreys are making a remarkable comeback in Britain, and researchers have identified an unexpected driver of their recovery: bold pairs who choose to nest far from their fellow raptors, establishing new territories in unoccupied areas.

A comprehensive study spanning 54 years of osprey recolonization in northern Scotland has revealed that these so-called pioneering pairs are critical to accelerating the species' spatial expansion. The research, published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, examined nest distribution, density patterns, and settlement behaviors to understand how ospreys spread across the landscape after their return to Britain.

The findings carry particular significance given the species' troubled history. Ospreys once bred throughout much of Britain but disappeared entirely by 1916 due to hunting and egg collecting. Natural recolonization began in 1954 when a pair returned to a nest site at Loch Garten in Scotland, sparking decades of conservation work.

Brittany Maxted, a PhD researcher at Bournemouth University who led the study, explained that osprey behavior typically works against rapid population spread. Most males exhibit natal philopatry, meaning they breed close to their birthplace, and the birds generally prefer nesting where other ospreys already exist. These tendencies result in slow territorial expansion for such a large raptor.

However, the research team identified a crucial exception. A small number of pairs settle more than 12 miles away from all other ospreys, seeking areas without competition. "We call these 'pioneering pairs' as they recolonize new areas, and in doing so create separate subpopulations and increase the speed of recovery for the species," Maxted told Good News Network.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Birds of Poole Harbour and The Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, organizations that monitor osprey populations in parts of Northern Scotland. The research team discovered that osprey expansion patterns mirror those observed in much better-studied phenomena, such as invasive species spread.

Dr. Tim Mackrill, lead ornithologist at the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and study co-author, emphasized the importance of these rare pioneering individuals. The spatial expansion of ospreys depends heavily on their long-distance dispersal, he noted, suggesting that conservation efforts should focus on encouraging or replicating these pioneering movements.

Conservationists have developed practical applications based on these insights. Building artificial nests can entice ospreys into new areas, while translocation projects physically move individuals to establish populations in suitable habitat. These techniques have already proven successful in restoring the species to regions where it had been absent for generations.

Poole Harbour in Dorset provides a compelling case study. Beginning in 2017, the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and Birds of Poole Harbour launched a five-year translocation initiative, moving young ospreys from northern Scotland to the southern coast. Healthy chicks were taken from established nests at seven weeks old, then raised and released in their new environment to familiarize themselves with the landscape.

The project yielded historic results in 2022 when the first breeding pair in Southern England since 1847 successfully hatched two chicks. The male had been translocated from Scotland, while the female flew in from a population 124 miles away, drawn by the presence of the translocated young birds.

That original Poole Harbour pair has returned to breed at the same nest each year since, producing four chicks annually for three consecutive years. This summer marked their third year hatching four chicks, all of which will remain dependent on their parents for food until departing on migration in September. Over three years, the pair has raised 12 chicks total.

The success has multiplied beyond the initial pair. A second pair now breeds away from the main harbor area, and the first wild-born Poole Harbour chick has established itself as a breeding bird in the East Midlands. Both pairs are forming new subpopulations and narrowing the geographic gap between Poole Harbour and the nearest osprey population at Rutland Water.

Dr. Roy Dennis, who has monitored and conserved the Scottish population since the 1960s, provided the decades-long dataset that made the new study possible. The continuation of this research demonstrates the value of long-term ecological monitoring in understanding species recovery.

Looking ahead, conservationists have already installed artificial nests in neighboring counties including Devon and Hampshire to encourage further expansion along the south coast of England. The research team hopes their findings will inspire increased conservation action for ospreys throughout Europe, where the species remains absent from much of its historical range.

The study offers broader lessons about species restoration, an area where scientific understanding has been limited. By identifying the mechanisms that drive natural recolonization, conservationists can design more effective interventions to accelerate recovery rates for threatened and locally extinct species.
