A remarkable encounter between Oakland firefighters and an injured pigeon has captured widespread attention on social media after video footage showed emergency responders treating the bird for smoke inhalation.
The E29 crew of Oakland Firefighters discovered the distressed pigeon following their response to a vehicle fire in East Oakland on Wednesday evening. According to Oakland Firefighters Local 55, the bird actively sought assistance from the emergency personnel.
"The crew reported, the pigeon came up to them seeking help," the organization stated on its Facebook page.
Recognizing signs of smoke inhalation in the bird, firefighters administered oxygen to help clear its respiratory system. The intervention proved successful, with the pigeon flying away after receiving treatment.
"The bird soon flew away after clearing out its lungs," Oakland Firefighters Local 55 reported.
The incident sparked considerable discussion on social media about the relationship between pigeons and humans. Multiple commenters emphasized that pigeons are domesticated birds accustomed to human interaction, which may explain the bird's willingness to approach the firefighters.
"We domesticated pigeons—they come to us for help because we trained them to," wrote Katherine Linville. "Sweet little birds."
