A prominent NBC News anchor has chosen family over career advancement, announcing his departure from a high-profile weekend morning show after years of extensive travel separated him from his loved ones.

Peter Alexander, who has served as anchor of Saturday Today since 2018, revealed his decision during a March 2026 broadcast, explaining that the demanding schedule had kept him away from his Washington, D.C. home for more than 80 nights in the previous seven months alone. Over the course of seven years in the role, he missed more than 200 Friday nights with his family.

"I've had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News," Alexander stated during the emotional announcement. "I could not be more grateful for the leaders and mentors here who have believed in me and given me more opportunities than I ever dreamed of."

The decision represents a significant sacrifice in an era when work-life balance remains a persistent challenge for professionals, particularly those in demanding media careers. Alexander's choice underscores the growing recognition among high-profile figures that career success must sometimes yield to personal priorities.

A Distinguished Career in Journalism

Alexander began his national career with NBC News in 2012 after establishing himself at various local news stations. He initially served as the network's White House correspondent, a position he held intermittently throughout his tenure, before ascending to the Saturday Today anchor desk in October 2018.

The anchor described his time on the weekend morning program as "literally so fun," yet acknowledged the substantial toll the commute from Washington, D.C. to New York took on his family life. The position required him to be away from home every Friday evening and Saturday morning, creating a pattern of absence that ultimately became unsustainable.

Family at the Center of Decision

Alexander is married to Alison Starling, herself an accomplished journalist who appeared on Washington, D.C. station WJLA-TV's weekday broadcast from August 2003 to November 2023. The couple met in 2001 and maintained a relationship for a decade before becoming engaged in 2011. They married in Washington, D.C. in April 2012.

Together, Alexander and Starling share two daughters, Ava and Emma. The prospect of missing critical moments in their lives weighed heavily on the anchor's decision to step away from his weekend hosting duties.

"In this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me, and it's already happened quick, I'm eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives," Alexander explained during his announcement. "I want to challenge myself with something new. I'm excited because I was taught, 'Family first, the rest is details.'"

Colleagues Express Support

The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from NBC colleagues. Cohost Laura Jarrett became visibly emotional while addressing Alexander on air.

"Peter, we love you, we are going to miss you," Jarrett said. "We have laughed so hard we want to cry with you, we have learned from you and we are not the only ones."

Alexander concluded his farewell by thanking the network for what he called "undoubtedly the most exciting years" of his career, expressing gratitude for the trust and confidence NBC News placed in him throughout his two-decade tenure.

The departure highlights an ongoing conversation within the broadcast journalism industry about the sustainability of demanding schedules and the importance of maintaining connections with family, particularly as professionals navigate the challenges of raising children while pursuing high-profile careers.
