A Moncton resident has dedicated more than a decade to ensuring that every child in her community has the opportunity to experience the joy of riding a bicycle, regardless of their family's financial circumstances. Krista Richard, organizer of the Bikes and Trikes for Everyone program, has distributed thousands of bicycles and tricycles to local children since launching her initiative 14 years ago.

The program operates on a simple but powerful premise: Richard collects donated bikes throughout the year, repairs them, and holds regular giveaways between April and October for families who cannot afford to purchase new bicycles. The demand for her services remains substantial, with approximately 400 children on her waiting list last year alone.

"The reward of seeing kids smile and ride off on their bikes is priceless," Richard said, describing the motivation behind her sustained commitment to the program.

Among the recent recipients were Younis and Aws, two children who prepared for their bicycle pickup with particular care, wearing their best Friday clothes and styling their hair for the momentous occasion of receiving their first real bikes. Such moments underscore the significance these bicycles hold for families who might otherwise be unable to provide this childhood experience.

Richard's vision extends beyond simply providing transportation or recreation. She articulated a broader social philosophy during an interview with CBC News, emphasizing the community-building potential of outdoor activity and neighborhood interaction.

"With all these video games, there's no social contact and people don't know who their neighbors are anymore," Richard explained. "But if you get a bunch of kids on their bike, then they get to know each other and then the families get to know each other, and I think the more time you spend outside the better."

The program operates with a small team of volunteers who primarily assist with collecting donated bicycles. Richard handles much of the remaining work herself, including the repair and refurbishment process. All giveaways take place on Sunday, providing families with a consistent schedule for receiving their bicycles.

Recognizing that children benefit most when parents can participate in outdoor activities alongside them, Richard has expanded her inventory to include adult bicycles. This addition enables entire families to ride together, further strengthening the community connections she seeks to foster.

The Bikes and Trikes for Everyone program represents a sustained grassroots effort to address economic inequality while promoting physical health, outdoor recreation, and neighborhood cohesion. Over 14 years, Richard has transformed what could have been discarded bicycles into vehicles for childhood joy and community connection, one repaired bike at a time.

For families interested in receiving a bicycle or individuals wishing to donate, the program continues to accept bikes year-round as Richard prepares for another season of giveaways extending through October.
