Country music star Maren Morris is speaking openly about the challenges she has faced while navigating her identity and relationships nearly two years after publicly coming out as bisexual.
In a candid video posted to her TikTok account on Wednesday, April 15, the 36-year-old Grammy-winning artist detailed what she described as a troubling experience during her first romantic relationship with a woman. The encounter, which Morris characterized as her initial foray into same-sex dating, left her feeling disillusioned and shaken.
Morris explained that she had entered the relationship with clear boundaries and expectations, seeking something casual rather than a serious commitment. According to the singer, she communicated her intentions directly from the outset.
"I briefly was seeing a woman and I was not looking for anything serious," Morris recalled in the clip. "I feel like I'm at a point in my life right now where I don't have that to give. I was very clear about that because I'm all about communication, and she was like, 'Oh, totally. I'm down.'"
Despite what appeared to be mutual understanding, Morris soon recognized that her partner seemed to desire a more serious relationship than she was prepared to offer. The situation deteriorated rapidly, culminating in what the singer described as deeply disturbing behavior.
"I'm not kidding, within like, three weeks of this completely falling apart, it was lies, threats to my reputation and borderline extortion," Morris shared. She added, "It was pretty f***ed up. And for that to be my first experience, it was just so depressing."
The revelation offers a sobering glimpse into the complexities Morris has encountered while exploring her identity following her divorce from fellow singer Ryan Hurd. The artist has been increasingly vocal about her experiences navigating the dating world as a newly out bisexual woman, sharing both the joys and challenges that come with self-discovery.
In a previous interview on Betches' "U Up?" podcast in May 2025, Morris discussed the unique dynamics she has observed when connecting with women compared to men. She noted the ease and depth with which women can form emotional bonds, though this quality has also created moments of confusion for her.
"I also have, like, confusion sometimes because I can connect with a woman, any woman within like two minutes," Morris said during the podcast appearance. "We'll be talking about our childhoods. We'll be talking about the bully when we were 13. We will get into it so quickly. With a guy, that would take like years to get into that trauma."
Morris elaborated on the challenge of distinguishing romantic interest from deep friendship when connecting with other women. The intensity and speed of emotional connection, while meaningful, has sometimes blurred the lines between platonic and romantic relationships.
"Sometimes I just love a woman and we're friends. Then she's giving me a vibe of, like, she's gonna kiss me, and I feel like we're just friends, but I really connect with you on this emotionally deep level," Morris explained. "That's where I sometimes have the hard delineation of romance versus friendship because women can connect so quickly and easily, which is a magical thing about us, but that's the comparison, I guess, to dating men."
Morris came out as bisexual in 2024 following her divorce from Hurd. In her coming-out statement, she wrote, "Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+ happy pride 🌈."
By sharing her experiences publicly, Morris continues to contribute to broader conversations about identity, sexuality, and the realities of dating as an LGBTQ+ individual. Her willingness to discuss both positive and negative experiences provides valuable perspective for others navigating similar journeys of self-discovery and relationship exploration.
