Man Secretly Trains Two Months to Support Girlfriend's First Half Marathon

When Emma Kessler climbed into the car headed to her first half marathon, she had no idea her boyfriend Jason Burns had stashed running shoes in the trunk and planned to join her for every step of the 13.1-mile race.

The 22-year-old Kessler had spent weeks battling anxiety about the Rockin' Riverfest Half Marathon in St. Charles, Missouri. She repeatedly asked Burns to run alongside her, hoping a partner would boost both her pace and her confidence. Each time, he gave the same answer: no, he could not do it.

What Kessler did not know was that Burns, a competitive powerlifter, had been preparing a surprise for two months. He had registered for the race without telling her and trained every weekend in secret, determined to repay the unwavering support she had shown at his powerlifting competitions.

"Ever since we met, she has been to every one of my competitions and supported me no matter how far away they were, or how much they cost," Burns told USA Today. "I didn't really think it's fair if I sit on the side of the course and only see her for 30 seconds during her two-hour (race), so I decided that it didn't matter how I felt on the day, if she was going to run, I was going to run with her."

Burns watched Kessler's anxiety intensify as race day approached. He knew revealing his plan would provide immediate relief, transforming her solo endeavor into a shared experience.

"I knew she'd be relieved knowing she didn't have to run alone because I watched her anxiety about the race increase every week that we got closer to actual race day," Burns told USA Today.

On race morning, Burns told Kessler he had something to show her in the trunk. Video captured the moment she discovered his running shoes, her confusion giving way to tears of joy and disbelief. Burns even produced a printed text message she had sent previously expressing her wish that he would run half marathons with her.

When Burns confessed he had been running every weekend since her last race, Kessler's response was immediate: the anxiety vanished. She no longer faced the daunting 13-mile course alone.

Video footage from the race shows the couple running side by side at mile 4.6 and again near mile 9.75. After 2 hours and 29 minutes on the course, they crossed the finish line together, both wearing medals around their necks.

The gesture underscores how acts of support within relationships often come full circle. Burns, accustomed to having Kessler cheer from the sidelines at his powerlifting events regardless of distance or expense, found his own way to stand beside her when it mattered most.
