The City of Los Angeles formally recognized one of its most influential cultural figures on Saturday, dedicating the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue as Nipsey Hussle Square. The ceremony proved particularly poignant as those closest to the late rapper revealed he had foreseen this very honor years before his tragic death.
Lauren London, Nipsey Hussle's former partner and mother of his son, delivered an emotional address to the assembled crowd, struggling to contain her tears as she shared an intimate memory. According to London, the rapper—whose legal name was Ermias Asghedom—had spoken with remarkable certainty about the recognition that would eventually come to pass.
"When me and Nip first started dating, we would drive by over here and he would be like, 'You know, Boogie, one day, they're gonna name this whole section after me.' And here we are today," London recounted, using the affectionate nickname Hussle had given her.
The intersection holds profound significance in Nipsey Hussle's legacy. The original location of his entrepreneurial venture, The Marathon clothing store, stood near this very crossing. It was outside this storefront in March 2019 that the 33-year-old rapper and community activist was fatally shot, sending shockwaves through Los Angeles and the broader music community.
Following the tragedy, the physical store location closed its doors. However, The Marathon brand has persevered, continuing to operate and honor Hussle's vision for economic empowerment and community investment in South Los Angeles.
Blacc Sam, Nipsey Hussle's older brother and current Chief Executive Officer of The Marathon brand, also addressed attendees at Saturday's dedication ceremony. His remarks emphasized the spiritual connection between his late brother and the neighborhood that shaped him.
"His spirit and his soul is here in this section," Blacc Sam stated, acknowledging the enduring presence of his brother's influence in the community.
The dedication of Nipsey Hussle Square represents more than ceremonial recognition. It serves as a permanent testament to an artist who transcended entertainment to become a symbol of entrepreneurship, community reinvestment, and social activism. Throughout his career, Hussle advocated for economic development in underserved neighborhoods and worked to create opportunities for residents of South Los Angeles.
The intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson has long held cultural significance in Los Angeles, particularly within the African American community. Now, with Nipsey Hussle's name permanently affixed to this location, it stands as a landmark honoring both his artistic contributions and his commitment to uplifting his community.
As speakers at the ceremony noted, invoking one of Hussle's most famous phrases: The Marathon continues. Through this dedication, the City of Los Angeles ensures that future generations passing through this intersection will encounter the legacy of a man who believed in the power of perseverance, community, and the prophetic vision that one day, this very spot would bear his name.
