A London senior center recently transformed into an unexpected venue for joy and connection when DJ AG, an entertainer who has shared stages with Ed Sheeran and Idris Elba, volunteered his time to lead a spirited day rave aimed at combating isolation among older adults.
The event, organized by Age UK Barnet—one of 100 local branches in the Age UK network—took place at the Ann Owens Centre and featured DJ AG's signature karaoke-style singalong sessions. The atmosphere quickly evolved into what participants described as an unforgettable afternoon of anthems and energetic dancing, guided by a professional dance tutor who helped attendees navigate the moves.
The DJ, who donated his performance free of charge, expressed genuine admiration for the crowd's enthusiasm. "I've performed on streets all over the world, but walking into that room was something really special," he said. "These guys were right up there with the best crowds I've played to—giving it absolutely everything."
Among the participants was 84-year-old Helen, who revealed the event marked her first time ever on a dance floor. "It was well worth the wait!" she declared, capturing the sentiment of many attendees who found themselves swept up in the music and movement.
Lenny, 84, from Mill Hill, shared his initial skepticism about the concept. "I wasn't sure what to expect when they told us a DJ was coming in—especially when they said it would be live-streamed, but it turned out to be an amazing afternoon," he explained. "I'm not a natural dancer but they made it easy to feel included. I loved singing and dancing along with everyone. It brought back memories of my youth!"
The emotional impact extended beyond simple entertainment. Lenny emphasized the deeper significance of the gathering, stating, "This human connection really lifted us all—bringing color and joy to these challenging times. I always look forward to the events that Age UK Barnet puts on. They help me enjoy later life so much more than I ever thought I could. I'm incredibly grateful and actually feel positive about the future."
The day rave represents one component of a significantly expanded effort by Age UK to address loneliness among older populations. The organization is utilizing funds from a substantial $7 million (£5.25 million) donation raised through Omaze, a sweepstakes company that held a lottery-type drawing in 2024 for a free house. The fundraising campaign achieved a historic milestone, collecting the most money ever raised for a charity partner in Omaze's history.
These proceeds are enabling Age UK to deliver over 10 million minutes of vital friendship, social activities, and practical support to older people across the United Kingdom. Hannorah Lee, Fundraising Director for Age UK, observed the tangible results of this investment. "Seeing everyone singing, dancing and joining in together was fantastic," she said.
Matt Pohlson, Founder and CEO of Omaze, characterized the event as exemplifying the partnership's intended impact. "When people enter our draws to win life-changing prizes, they're also supporting incredible charities, helping them to change the lives of the people they help," he noted. The Omaze drawings have collectively raised over £100 million ($135 million) for charitable causes across the United Kingdom.
DJ AG reflected on the experience with evident enthusiasm, remarking, "Music brings people together whatever your age, and the OGs at the centre proved that ten times over. Seeing everyone jumping around and singing along, made it unforgettable." He added a sentiment that underscored his commitment to the cause: "I'd do this every week if I could."
The initiative highlights a growing recognition of social isolation as a significant health concern among elderly populations, and demonstrates how creative programming can address this challenge while simultaneously celebrating the vitality and spirit of older adults. The success of the Ann Owens Centre event suggests that unconventional approaches to senior engagement may offer meaningful pathways to connection and community building.
