The Medal of Honor Society recognized actor Johnny Wactor with a posthumous heroism award on Wednesday, honoring his final act of courage nearly two years after his death in downtown Los Angeles.

The organization named Wactor a 2026 Single Act of Heroism Honoree for his actions on May 25, 2024, when he attempted to shield a coworker from danger during a confrontation with thieves attempting to steal his catalytic converter. The actor died in his coworker's arms after the shooting occurred in the early morning hours as he walked her to her vehicle.

The Medal of Honor Society stated that Wactor's actions embodied his lifelong commitment to protecting others. His mother, Scarlett Wactor, accepted the award on her son's behalf at a ceremony in Virginia, accompanied by her youngest son, Grant. Retired United States Army Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell presented the honor.

The recognition came after a fan nominated Wactor for the award. Scarlett Wactor received notification last month that her son had been selected from a pool of more than 300 applicants. The Medal of Honor Society provided travel accommodations for the family, flying them from Los Angeles to the nation's capital and covering expenses for their four-day stay, which included hotel, meals, transportation, and opportunities for sightseeing.

Speaking about the honor, Scarlett Wactor expressed gratitude that the organization recognized her son among numerous other exceptional individuals. The award represents formal acknowledgment of the selfless act that defined the final moments of Wactor's life.

Legal proceedings related to the incident have progressed through the Los Angeles County court system. Leonel Gutierrez and Frank Olano, two individuals connected to the case, entered guilty pleas to robbery charges. Gutierrez received a four-year prison sentence, while Olano was sentenced to five years and eight months.

Two additional defendants, Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, face murder charges in connection with Wactor's death. Both have entered not guilty pleas. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has announced that prosecutors will not seek the death penalty in the case.

The Single Act of Heroism award recognizes civilians who demonstrate extraordinary courage in life-threatening situations. The Medal of Honor Society, which supports recipients of the nation's highest military decoration, extends its mission to honor civilian acts of valor that exemplify similar principles of selflessness and bravery.
