The complicated relationship between former professional basketball player Lamar Odom and television personality Khloé Kardashian continues to captivate public attention as both parties have recently participated in separate documentary projects examining their tumultuous marriage and its aftermath.
Odom, 46, and Kardashian, 41, entered into marriage in 2009 after a whirlwind courtship lasting only one month. The union, which appeared promising initially, deteriorated over four years before Kardashian filed for divorce. The legal proceedings took an unexpected turn when Odom suffered a near-fatal overdose at a Nevada establishment, prompting Kardashian to postpone the divorce to assist in his medical care.
The former couple reunited on camera for an episode of the streaming series The Kardashians in February 2025. The encounter, arranged so Kardashian could return personal possessions to Odom, proved emotionally charged and uncomfortable for both parties. Odom arrived 52 minutes late bearing flowers, cake, and champagne, displaying visible signs of nervousness throughout the interaction.
"I don't know this person anymore. It is just a mindf***," Kardashian stated during the episode. "He is visibly uncomfortable, he is nervous and sweating. I don't know if he thinks I am going to go off on him. But he just seems scared."
During their conversation, Odom referred to Kardashian as his wife, a designation she rejected. "For him to call me his wife, words are empty," she explained. "When it was great, it was spectacular. When it was bad, it was horrific."
Kardashian recounted the extent of her commitment during Odom's medical crisis following his overdose. "I was there through it all. We transferred you from Vegas to Cedars," she stated. "I didn't leave you for four months. I got a staph infection because I lived in a hospital."
Odom acknowledged his failures during the reunion. "I put you through a lot," he admitted. "I f***ed up with you. I love you for trying your hardest with me. That love will never go away, I know it won't."
The narrative continued in a Netflix documentary titled Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, released approximately one year after their televised reunion. In this project, the former spouses provided separate interviews, as Kardashian noted they had lost contact following her decision to file for divorce a second time after Odom's recovery.
Kardashian offered disturbing details about the severity of Odom's substance abuse issues during their marriage. "The drug buildup was getting worse and worse. There were many times Lamar would go for 12 hours or two days and escape rehab. He would go on a drug bender and no one could find him," she revealed. "I was either looking for him in alleys or looking for him in motels. He would have tinfoil cutouts or spoons and he was freebasing things and leaving things everywhere. I remember needing to go to hotel rooms to clean up after him."
She acknowledged her role in enabling his addiction. "I was such an enabler without knowing I was an enabler. But I just felt such a responsibility to cover this up, hold it together and protect him," Kardashian stated.
The situation deteriorated further after Odom's trade to the Dallas Mavericks. Kardashian described his substance abuse during that period as "monstrous," detailing incidents where Odom remained locked in hotel bathrooms for extended periods. "I've just never seen so many drugs in such a dark spot and it was just such a dark aura around us," she said. "They weren't testing for certain painkillers and he knew which ones they weren't. He was freebasing painkillers. He was locked in the hotel bathroom for maybe four days just doing drugs. Has no concept of time. He was horrible because he was so f***ed up and high."
The public documentation of their relationship through these projects provides insight into the challenges faced by families dealing with addiction, while also raising questions about the intersection of personal trauma and entertainment media. Both parties have moved forward with their lives since their divorce was finalized, though the emotional impact of their shared history remains evident in their public statements.
