The long-anticipated reboot of a cult classic television series has been officially canceled, and the original star is placing blame squarely on a single Hulu executive who never watched the show.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred in the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series, disclosed new details about the cancellation in an interview published Monday. According to Gellar, the project faced significant obstacles from the beginning due to an executive who not only disliked the original series but took pride in his unfamiliarity with it.

"We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him," Gellar stated. "So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."

The actress emphasized that the reboot was intended specifically for the show's devoted fanbase. "We were doing it because everybody loves it. So how do you do a show that's beloved with someone that doesn't love it?" she questioned.

Gellar declined to identify the specific Hulu executive responsible for the decision. The timing of the cancellation proved particularly unfortunate, as she received the news last week moments before taking the stage at South by Southwest to promote her upcoming film.

The revelation has sparked frustration among fans who had eagerly awaited the return of the supernatural drama. The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, developed a passionate following and is widely regarded as a groundbreaking show that redefined genre television.

The cancellation raises broader questions about creative decision-making in the streaming era, particularly when executives unfamiliar with source material hold significant authority over beloved properties. For devoted fans of the original series, the news represents a disappointing end to hopes of seeing their favorite characters return to screens.
