Federal immigration authorities have clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of six individuals near Cambridge on March 23, contradicting a narrative that spread rapidly across social media platforms.

A viral video circulating online suggested a Maryland homeowner hired Guatemalan workers to replace her roof, then contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement to have them deported before paying for the completed work. However, ICE officials have categorically rejected this account.

According to an ICE spokesperson, the incident resulted from a targeted enforcement operation conducted independently by federal agents. The operation led to the apprehension of six individuals near Cambridge, with no involvement from a private citizen tip.

"This was a targeted enforcement operation, not a tip from a caller," the ICE representative stated. The spokesperson indicated that several of those arrested had final orders of removal, which constitutes a felony offense. Additionally, one individual had been previously convicted of illegal reentry into the United States.

The enforcement action encountered resistance, according to federal officials. During the encounter, the individuals refused to comply with lawful orders, taunted officers, and attempted to flee before ultimately being taken into custody.

Federal authorities emphasized that individuals facing removal proceedings have options available to them. ICE officials noted that the government currently offers a voluntary departure program providing $2,600 and transportation for individuals who choose to leave the country on their own accord.

"Being in detention is a choice," the ICE representative stated. "We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $2,600 and a free flight to self-deport now."

The agency emphasized that voluntary departure preserves the possibility of legal reentry in the future, whereas deportation following arrest eliminates that opportunity. Officials encouraged individuals without legal status to utilize the voluntary departure program to maintain eligibility for future legal immigration.

Video footage documenting the arrest was released on Thursday morning, March 26. The thirty-minute recording quickly gained traction on social media platforms, prompting the federal agency to issue its clarification regarding the operation's origins and execution.

The incident has drawn attention to immigration enforcement practices in the region and highlighted the rapid spread of unverified information through digital channels. Federal officials maintain that the operation was conducted as part of ongoing targeted enforcement efforts in the Cambridge area.
