The father of a murdered teenager has announced he will not attend his stepson's upcoming trial unless legally compelled to do so, citing the emotional toll of reliving the tragedy that claimed his daughter's life.
Christopher Kepner disclosed that he has no plans to be present when his stepson, identified as T.H., stands trial for the murder of 18-year-old Anna Kepner. The 16-year-old defendant is accused of sexually assaulting and killing his stepsister during a family cruise aboard a Carnival vessel in November.
Christopher Kepner's wife, Shauntel Kepner, who is the mother of the accused, will likewise not attend the proceedings. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Christopher Kepner stated, "Unless they ask for me to be there, neither my wife or I will be attending." He explained that prosecutors have "everything they need" in terms of evidence and indicated the experience would be "too painful to relive it all again."
The case has drawn significant attention due to its disturbing circumstances. Anna Kepner's body was discovered beneath a bed in the cabin she shared with T.H. aboard Carnival's Horizon ship. Medical examiners determined her cause of death to be mechanical asphyxiation.
Christopher Kepner recounted the harrowing moment he arrived at the scene. "I checked her pulse. I pulled her out from under the bed. I knew my daughter was dead long before the medical examiner got there," he told the Daily Mail. The father was among the first individuals to reach his daughter after she was found.
According to reports that emerged following the incident, the defendant allegedly harbored an unusual fixation on his stepsister, including an instance in which he climbed on top of her in bed.
T.H. will be tried as an adult in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in June. The defendant has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against him. If convicted, he faces the possibility of life in prison.
The decision by both parents to absent themselves from the courtroom underscores the profound emotional devastation the case has inflicted on the family. Christopher Kepner's statement reflects the impossible position faced by families torn apart by such tragedies, where the pursuit of justice intersects with unbearable personal grief.
