Death Certificate Reveals Details of Martin Short's Daughter Katherine's Passing

The death certificate of Katherine Hartley Short has been released, offering new details about the tragic passing of the mental health professional and daughter of actor Martin Short. The document confirms that Katherine, 42, died at her California residence on Monday, February 23, and was cremated four days later on Friday, February 27.

According to official records, Katherine's occupation was listed as a social work therapist, a profession she pursued for a decade after obtaining her master's degree. She maintained a part-time position at the Amae Health clinic, dedicating her career to supporting individuals facing mental health challenges.

Emergency Response and Discovery

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a radio call regarding a possible suicide attempt at approximately 6:43 p.m. on February 23. Upon arrival at the Hollywood Hills residence, responding officers from both the LAPD and Los Angeles Fire Department discovered Katherine deceased.

Law enforcement sources indicated that Katherine was found behind a locked door with a note nearby. A concerned friend, who had not heard from Katherine for approximately 24 hours, conducted a welfare check and subsequently contacted emergency services. Dispatch audio obtained by media outlets revealed that the individual who placed the 911 call was present at the residence but unable to access a bedroom.

Professional Life and Privacy

Katherine had taken deliberate steps to maintain professional boundaries between her career and her father's public profile. In October 2012, she filed legal documents to change her name to Katherine Elizabeth Hartley. In court filings, she explained her reasoning with clarity: her father's status as a public figure created potential complications for her work as a psychiatric social worker.

This decision reflected Katherine's commitment to her clients and her understanding of the ethical considerations inherent in mental health practice. The name change allowed her to establish her own professional identity separate from her family's celebrity status.

Family Background

Katherine was adopted by Martin Short, 75, and his late wife Nancy Dolman. She was the only daughter in the family, which also included two adopted sons: Oliver, 39, and Henry, 36. Martin and Nancy married in 1989 and remained together until Nancy's death in August 2010 at age 58 following a battle with ovarian cancer.

The death certificate noted that Katherine never married. Neighbors described her as a private yet friendly individual who showed no outward signs of distress prior to her passing.

Family Statement

A representative for Martin Short released a statement on behalf of the family following Katherine's death. The statement read: "It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world."

The family has requested privacy as they navigate this difficult period. Katherine's dedication to mental health services and her commitment to helping others remains a significant part of her legacy.
