California Condor Reaches Oregon After 122-Year Absence

A California condor has made a remarkable journey into Oregon, marking the first recorded presence of the critically endangered species in the state since 1904. The bird, identified as condor B9, completed a 380-mile loop over four days last month before returning to its home territory in Redwoods National Park.

Conservation officials with the Yurok Tribe, who have been monitoring the condor population in northern California, confirmed the bird's identity after tracking its movements. Condor B9 was born in captivity and released into the wild by the Yurok in 2022, making this extended flight a significant milestone in the young bird's development.

The condor's journey began high in the redwoods and took the bird past Redding in northern California before crossing into Oregon. During its time in the state, B9 made stops near Medford, Cave Junction, and Brookings before recrossing state lines and returning to the national park.

Yurok Tribe Wildlife Department Director Tiana Williams Claussen characterized B9 as an especially curious bird, noting the impressive distance covered during the expedition. "She flew almost 100 miles per day," Williams Claussen told the Oregon Organization for Public Broadcasting, "which means she was really utilizing the landscape the way that only a condor can, really taking advantage of those mountains and riverways that give good flight corridors."

The flight represents more than just an individual achievement. It demonstrates the expanding range and growing confidence of California condors as conservation efforts continue to show results. These birds, classified as Critically Endangered, have been the subject of intensive recovery efforts for decades.

The species faced near extinction in the 1980s, when the last 22 wild birds were captured and placed in a breeding program. By 2016, when more animals were born in the wild than died there for the first time, the population had grown to 276 wild individuals. The recovery has been slow but steady, with encouraging milestones becoming more frequent in recent years.

The Redwoods population achieved another significant moment in February when a female laid an egg in the hollow of a redwood tree in a remote corner of the park. Though the egg ultimately failed to hatch, it marked the first time such nesting behavior had occurred in over a century.

Williams Claussen remained optimistic despite the egg loss. "Even with the egg loss, that was still a really amazing milestone for us," she told the Oregon Organization for Public Broadcasting. "It's pretty common that eggs will fail in that first year, as these naive parents are really figuring it out."

The condor's journey into Oregon and subsequent return demonstrates the effectiveness of the Yurok Tribe's wildlife management efforts and suggests that the species may be gradually reclaiming portions of its historic range. California condors once soared throughout the Pacific Coast region before human activities drove them to the brink of extinction.

As North America's largest bird, with a wingspan reaching nearly ten feet, the California condor serves as both a conservation success story and a reminder of the long-term commitment required to restore endangered species. The appearance of B9 in Oregon after more than a century offers hope that continued conservation efforts may eventually see these magnificent birds reclaim more of their ancestral territory.
