The television industry has lost a significant creative force with the death of David Kendall, a producer, writer, and director whose work shaped some of the most memorable sitcoms in television history. Kendall was 68 years old.
The news was announced Saturday, May 2, through the official "Pod Meets World" Instagram account, where former cast members of Boy Meets World shared a heartfelt tribute to their longtime collaborator and mentor.
"To say that David Kendall was instrumental in the creation of Boy Meets World would be an understatement," the statement read. "He directed, wrote and executive produced our show, but also helped mold some of TV's most memorable sitcoms, from Growing Pains to Hannah Montana."
The tribute emphasized Kendall's profound influence on the careers of the "Pod Meets World" cohosts Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong. According to the statement, Kendall helped develop the "young creative voices" of these performers, serving first as a co-worker and later as a mentor. His impact extended beyond Boy Meets World, as he worked with stars including Austin Butler, Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas brothers "in the early stages of their careers."
The depth of the relationship between Kendall and the Boy Meets World cast remained strong across three decades. "We are devastated to lose such an important person in our lives, both professionally and personally," the statement continued. "We all kept in touch with David over the past 30 years, and are honored that we were able to share his incredible personality with our 'Pod Meets World' listeners."
The cast specifically highlighted Kendall's work during seasons 2 and 3 of Boy Meets World, when he served as showrunner. "We have lost a vital piece of our family — but we ask that the next time you watch the show, especially Seasons 2 & 3 (when he served as Showrunner), you think of our beloved Kendall," the statement read.
The post, which featured a photograph of Kendall smiling, concluded with a simple but poignant message: "We love you, David. Rest in peace. No notes."
A cause of death had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the announcement. The news prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans who had come to know Kendall through the "Pod Meets World" podcast, where he had appeared as a guest.
"Oh my gosh guys…I'm so sorry to hear of this loss. I'm so happy you got to have him on the show and be able to keep in contact over the years with him," one user wrote in the comments section. Another added, "Hearing you talk of him and seeing his impact on the episodes he directed, it makes this loss feel more personal to me. Condolences to everyone who actually worked with him."
