Actress Teri Hatcher has announced the death of her beloved dog Pumpkin, an 11-year-old rescue who spent years bringing comfort to pediatric patients as a certified therapy animal.

The 61-year-old former Desperate Housewives star shared the news via Instagram on Sunday, March 15, expressing profound grief over the loss of her companion who touched countless lives during his years of service.

"It is with deep sadness that I said goodbye to Pumpkin yesterday," Hatcher wrote in her emotional tribute. "Six years ago when I went looking to adopt a dog, I wanted a senior (because I knew most people would be looking for puppies). So I knew this day would eventually come faster than I would want it to."

Hatcher's decision to adopt an older dog reflected her commitment to providing a home for animals often overlooked in shelters. That choice led to a meaningful partnership that extended far beyond her personal household, as Pumpkin became a registered therapy dog serving the Los Angeles community.

The actress described how Pumpkin "had the chance to touch so many hearts and comfort so many souls" through regular visits to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. As a certified therapy team, Hatcher and Pumpkin provided emotional support to both young patients and hospital staff members during difficult times.

"Whether in my personal life or during visits to Children's Hospital Los Angeles as a dog therapy team to both patients and staff, his rock star looks with his cuddly soft fur and loving demeanor were an endless comfort and a true blessing," Hatcher explained in her post.

The tribute included photographs documenting Pumpkin's life, showing beach outings and moments with other members of the Hatcher household. One recent appearance captured Pumpkin dressed as a Jack-o-lantern during a Halloween celebration at the children's hospital in October 2025, where he remained by Hatcher's side as she read to young patients.

In her message, Hatcher acknowledged the challenges Pumpkin faced in his final days while praising his unwavering spirit. "I knew you always tried to be the best dog even when it was hard for your body... and Pumpkin, you were the best dog. I am gutted," she wrote. "I did, and would have done, anything and everything to make you well. I am so sorry there were not answers. Sometimes it is just like that."

The actress concluded her tribute with words of gratitude: "Thank you, Pumpkin, for coming into my life and for all you gave to so many. Bless you, sweet Pumpkin. You truly were the best dog."

Fellow celebrities and colleagues offered condolences in response to the announcement. Television personality Lisa Rinna commented on the difficulty of losing a pet, while Andrea Bowen, Hatcher's former Desperate Housewives costar and current podcast cohost, acknowledged the meaningful life Hatcher provided for her rescue dog.

Therapy dogs like Pumpkin play an essential role in healthcare settings, providing emotional support and comfort to patients facing medical challenges. Research has demonstrated that animal-assisted therapy can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improve overall well-being in hospital environments, particularly for pediatric patients.

Hatcher's commitment to adopting a senior dog highlights an ongoing need within animal welfare communities. Older dogs frequently spend longer periods in shelters as potential adopters gravitate toward younger animals, despite senior pets often being well-trained, calmer, and equally deserving of loving homes.
